Rocky Ridge Park

Rocky Ridge Park, located in East York, PA, is a natural oasis that spans over 750 acres. Acquired in 1968, it holds the distinction of being the first county park. The park is perched on a rock-strewn hilltop northwest of Hellam, one of the first places the county’s original settlers established homes.

The park is primarily composed of a mature oak forest, accounting for ninety percent of its area. This lush, green landscape is a haven for nature lovers, offering a serene environment for quiet observation and exploration. The park’s prime attractions are its picnic pavilions, multi-use trails, and the breathtaking scenic views of the Susquehanna Valley.

Rocky Ridge Park boasts over twelve miles of multi-use trails that are open to hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers. These trails, however, are closed to horses and bikers during “wet conditions,” as determined by Park Rangers. The park also features two scenic observation decks. One deck offers a panoramic view of the Susquehanna Valley and is ADA accessible. The other deck provides a view of the York Valley.

For fitness enthusiasts, the park features a half-mile, cinder, all-weather fitness trail with 20 exercise stations scattered throughout. This trail starts in the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area and ends at the observation deck on the north side of the park.

Limited hunting is allowed in the park with a special permit issued by the Parks Office. The park also features horseshoe pits located in Hidden Laurel and Oak Timbers picnic areas.

Rocky Ridge Park is home to twelve pavilions that can be rented for a nominal fee. These pavilions, which are all ADA accessible, are located near parking lots and restrooms. The park also hosts a spectacular multi-colored light show, “Christmas Magic, A Festival of Lights,” from the Friday after Thanksgiving through December 30th.
